2007 winners and honorable mentions

1st: “R3: Products Re-Imagined” – R3/Academy of Art University

R3: Products Re-imagined is a collaborative project between the students at the Academy of Art University and California Lithographers to promote sustainable design. Each graphic design student from the Print 3 course was asked to identify an existing product and design a book to discuss its lifecycle and redesign. The result is this collection of printed samples that showcase each student’s innovative thinking, design and desire for social responsibility. Their books went beyond just raising awareness about sustainable design–rather they applied a viable design solution to a product– thus creating a direct impact on peoples’ lives.

2nd: “Only Human” – Tiffany Ricardo
3rd: “Do You Have 5 Min?” – Ihan Chen

Compassion fatigue is one of the modern social sickness. Most of us lose our individuality and the ability to think or feel by ourselves because of the mass media. Do you really care about the tragedies on the news, even when you cry for them? This film shows my self-examination on the quest of the “real care.”

Honorable Mention: “Underground” – Tomohiro Kaji

There are 70,000,000 landmines on the Earth. The casualties from landmines have been increasing. This is a whole design system for a symposium on banning landmines on the Earth called Underground. As is the truth hidden, design concept is “underground.”
